Scenes from the Life of St. Francis: Homage to three Renaissance Masters

Three paintings: oil on canvas, each 84”x 15”

Continuing with the concerns of absence and presence, of scrutiny and immanence.
1) Sassetta. I focused on the shadow cast by the cord of St. Francis’ tunic. A form cast into the real world by an extraterrestrial or metaphysical entity.
2) Giotto. The deterioration of the original surface gave me the opportunity to explore a linear infrastructure, which had a transient ghost-like quality.
3) Bellini. A painting which is illuminated by a metaphysical source which is outside the original field of vision.

Noli me Tangere; after Duccio

Three paintings: oil on canvas and steel panels, overall 42” x 126”
2000/2001

For many, many years I have been intently studying the paintings of Duccio. I am extremely interested in his use of a shallow space and the structural role of episode and gesture in the narrative.
